Mikel Obi scores first goal for Stoke city.
Super Eagles legend John Obi Mikel has began his career at English Championship club Stoke City on an impressive note after scoring for the side in their 5-1 win over Shrewsbury Town.
Although the encounter was a pre-season friendly, but the former Chelsea midfielder showed that he is in good shape and form to do well for Stoke City in their campaign in the coming season.
Stoke City started the match impressively and it took them only 10 minutes to open scoring through Tashan Oakley-Boothe who scored in an incredible fashion.
But five minutes later, Shrewsbury restored parity via a penalty which however made the encounter more tougher.
Three minutes to the end of the first half, Stoke City scored their second goal through John Mikel Obi who was in a good position to tap in a cross from Davies.
Mikel was in action for 45 minutes before he was replaced by Tom Ince while DR Congo’s Benik Afobe was introduced for Lee Gregory, nine minutes after the hour-mark, Goal reports.
Afobe joined the party later in the second half as goals from the Congolese star, Ince and Tyrese Campbell completed the rout for Stoke City.
Following Tuesday’s convincing victory, Mikel will be eager to steer the Potters to victory when they host Blackpool for their League Cup fixture at bet365 Stadium on Saturday.
Meanwhile, O’Neill has lauded the former Nigeria captain for showing an instant impact in the team with his hard work.
“John’s been great in his first few days. You can see his quality, there’s no doubt, people in the group see his quality,” he was quoted by Stoke Sentinel.
